Start With the Right Scenario
There's no single LED fixture that's right for every commercial space. That's not a sales line; it's the reality of replacing a Lithonia Lighting LK4BMW LED in a ceiling grid, relighting a sports field, retrofitting an old warehouse with Zigbee controls, or trying to give seedlings the right number of hours under a grow light. These are different problems with different answers.

Scenario 3: You're Upgrading for Savings, Controls, or an LED Bulb Retrofit
If you're replacing old fixtures to cut energy costs, the comparison starts with total cost of ownership, not the price tag. That means: fixture cost, shipping, tax, mounting accessories, controls, labor, commissioning, utility rebates, and the energy consumed over the fixture's lifetime.
I have mixed feelings about smart controls. On one hand, occupancy sensors can cut lighting energy by a meaningful amount. On the other hand, I've seen controls commissioning take twice as long as expected. Budget for programming and training, and verify compatibility before you order. Don't trust a vendor who promises 100% compatibility with everything—it's not a real promise.
Many utility rebates require the fixture to be on the DLC qualified products list. If the rebate is part of your payback math, check that before you commit. Also, if you're considering Zigbee controls, confirm that the fixtures you want actually support the same Zigbee profile. The word "compatible" gets used loosely.
For a smaller space, people often ask, "Why not just install an LED bulb?" In a screw-base fixture, that's usually fine. In a linear fluorescent fixture, though, the term "LED bulb" may mean a T8 tube that's either ballast-compatible or direct-wire. Those are very different installation jobs. A bulb LED replacement is only simple once you know which type you have.
If you're in a commercial building, this is also the time to verify emergency egress lighting and exit signs. NFPA 101 and local building codes typically require emergency lighting along exit paths. You don't need a battery in every fixture, but you need a system that keeps the path visible when the power goes out. A planned retrofit is the right time to fix that.
Scenario 4: How Long Should a Grow Light Be On for Seedlings?
This one's outside the usual commercial spotlight, but it comes up enough with greenhouses, classrooms, and even facility managers starting plants at home. The answer: 14 to 16 hours a day, followed by 8 to 10 hours of darkness. University extension guides recommend a consistent photoperiod, and a timer is the simplest way to keep it steady.
Most people focus on the number of hours and miss intensity. A grow light that's too far away makes seedlings stretch. One that's too close can stress or burn them. Check the recommended hanging distance for your panel, and adjust as the seedlings grow.
Also, don't run lights 24/7 thinking it will speed things up. Seedlings need a dark period to develop roots and regulate growth. More hours isn't better.
