Lithonia Lighting Fixture Guide: 2x2 Panels, LBR6 Downlights, Speaker Options, and Under Cabinet Lighting

Every lighting request that lands on my desk starts with the same question: What are you replacing, and how much time do you have? In my role coordinating lighting orders for contractors and facility teams, I've handled 200+ rush orders in four years, including same-day turnarounds for clients who discovered a problem 36 hours before a deadline. The answer to almost every lighting question depends on your situation. There is no single best fixture. So let's sort your situation first.

Here are the three scenarios I hear most often:

That said, for background audio in a small cafe, a hotel corridor, or a conference room lobby, downlight speakers can be a good tradeoff. Just don't sell them as a music system. They are for announcements and background sound.

One piece of advice that surprises people: when someone says they want a speaker downlight, I ask whether the ceiling is open or closed. If it's open, separate speakers and regular downlights are usually less headache. If it's closed or finished, a speaker downlight might be the only practical way to add audio without gutting the ceiling.

How to replace under cabinet lighting without starting a project

Under cabinet lighting is the request that makes people overthink. Most replacements are simple if you stop and identify the existing system first. Here's the process I use:

  1. Turn off the circuit at the breaker. The wall switch isn't enough. I've caught live circuits with the switch off and no visible signage to warn me.
  2. Find the driver or transformer. If the old fixture is low voltage 12V or 24V, there is a black power box somewhere under the sink or in an adjacent cabinet. Label the wires before you disconnect anything.
  3. Measure the mounting centers. This is exactly where communication failures happen. I told a client we would make it fit, and we discovered the new fixture's mounting slots were half an inch outside the old screw holes. It was fixable, but it cost an extra trip and a custom bracket.
  4. Choose the voltage. If the existing wiring is line voltage, use a line-voltage LED fixture. If it's low voltage, you can keep the existing transformer if it's rated for LED and replace the fixture, or replace the transformer too. Do not assume a low-voltage transformer can handle an LED load.
  5. Check the clearance above the fixture. Under cabinet lights need airflow. If the driver is pressed against the cabinet bottom, heat will shorten its life.

Five minutes of verification beats five days of correction. This is the rule I keep coming back to. Reading the spec sheet before you lift the ladder is the cheapest insurance you can buy.

Where smart lighting fits

Smart lighting is not one product. It's a control strategy. If the owner wants occupancy sensing, daylight dimming, scheduling, or integration with a building management system, you need to decide that before you order fixtures, not after.

For commercial projects, the fixtures I order with smart controls often use Zigbee-based communication. Zigbee is an established mesh protocol for lighting controls (Source: Connectivity Standards Alliance).
