I handle commercial lighting orders for a mid-size electrical contractor. In the past 7 years, I have personally made and documented 14 significant specification mistakes. Now every recessed fixture on my paperwork has a line for plenum depth. I also ask whether it's a new-construction or remodel housing, and whether the trim requires a specific bracket. These are not details. They are the difference between a smooth install and a punch-list nightmare.
When I compare a rush order and a standard order side by side, I notice the same thing every time. The rush order is where I skip the simple checks. The rush is where the money disappears.
The Spotlight Model: Why I Test Every Lithonia Driver
The third lesson is about what I call the spotlight model of fixture troubleshooting. Every lighting project has one component that gets all the attention when something goes wrong. So here is how I check an LED driver with a multimeter. This is not a full engineering test. It is a field check that has rescued us more than once.
- Turn off the power and open the driver compartment. On many Lithonia fixtures, the driver sits inside a tray or behind a door. Follow the fixture's instructions.
- Set the multimeter to DC volts. The output of an LED driver is DC. Check the driver label for the expected output voltage and current. Most drivers list a range, for example, 24V or 27-54V.
- Probe the output positive and negative terminals. If you read no voltage, check the input side. If line voltage is present and the output is still zero, the driver is the problem. If the output voltage reads higher than the label's rated maximum, that can happen with a constant-current driver under no load. Don't assume it's good just because you see volts.
One extra check: if the fixture has a 0-10V dimmer, test the dimming wires for a short. A shorted dimming cable can hold the driver at zero output even when the main output checks out. I almost replaced a full row of drivers that did not need replacing because I skipped that step.
If the driver passes the no-load voltage test but the LED module still won't light, try the driver on a known-good LED load. A constant-current driver can show normal voltage with no load and still fail once the circuit is complete.
One safety note: I'm a contractor, not an engineer. For code-specific questions, check the fixture's installation instructions and your local building department. In the U.S., most luminaire installation requirements are in NEC Article 410, but local amendments can change things. Verify current regs from the official source.

How to Make Verification Easy (So You Actually Do It)
I used to think checking every order was overkill. The turning point was a 32-piece order of wall packs where I typed a '0' instead of a '1' in the wattage field. The order came off the truck and 32 boxes of the wrong fixtures went right back. That was my moment: seeing the rework side by side with the five minutes I could have spent checking the order.
Today, verification is not a heroic act. It's a routine. Every order goes through the same steps: capture the customer's written spec, open the current datasheet, compare part number and options, then note site conditions. If anything doesn't match, I stop and call. The electricians used to call me the bottleneck. Now they call me the guy who catches problems before the lift rental runs out.
I also schedule a 15-minute 'no-touch time' at the end of the week to look back at any returns, repairs, or delays. It sounds basic. It's amazing how many patterns show up when you actually look at the numbers.
The Objections I Expect
I've heard contractors say, 'We don't have time to test every driver or measure every plenum.' I get it. I've been the person standing in a cold building with an electrician waiting on a ladder. But then again, I've also been the person standing in the same cold building the next week, fixing the thing I could have caught in 10 minutes.
Another objection is: 'It says Lithonia, so it will work.' My experience with 210 fixtures says most of them will work. But 'most' doesn't plug into the fixture. The one on site has to work. That is why prevention beats replacement.
If you're wondering whether a driver is worth testing: yes. A multimeter is a no-brainer investment. More importantly, a short checklist is cheaper than a callback. Red flags at the spec stage are cheaper than change orders at the job site.
The Checklist I Use Now
I don't have a magic system. I have a piece of paper in a plastic sleeve that I still pull out for every order.
- Confirm the exact Lithonia part number from the current catalog, not from memory.
- For track lighting, verify track manufacturer, track width, voltage, and connector compatibility.
- For recessed fixtures, check plenum depth, IC rating, and new-construction vs. remodel type.
- For any fixture with an LED driver, know whether the driver is replaceable in the field. Some fixtures have a driver tray; some don't.
- If a fixture doesn't light, run the multimeter test before replacing the whole unit.
I still use Lithonia lighting on a lot of projects. I trust the output, the warranty, and the support from Acuity Brands. But I no longer trust my memory. The day I started treating every fixture spec as something to verify, my callback rate dropped. That wasn't luck. It was the prevention-over-cure principle finally taking over.
Bottom line: with track lights, recessed downlights, or a simple driver failure, the most expensive words in our industry are 'I assumed.' Spend five minutes looking at the label, the datasheet, and the site conditions. It is the cheapest insurance you will ever buy.
