They look similar in photos and perform completely differently. “Chandelier lights” in a hotel lobby are subject to different codes and testing standards than a residential chandelier. And “can recessed lighting” can mean a 4-inch IC-rated remodel can for a ceiling with insulation, or a 6-inch non-IC new-construction can for a drop ceiling. If you've ever ordered the wrong one, you know the sinking feeling when the electrician calls.
Honestly, I'm not saying you need to become a lighting designer. I'm saying that a little education before the PO goes out saves a lot of time after it goes wrong.
The FTC Green Guides Remind Us Why Specs Matter
The rules around what you can claim about a fixture are part of this too. Per the FTC Green Guides (ftc.gov), an environmental claim like “recyclable” has to be substantiated. If a manufacturer says a fixture is recyclable, there needs to be a realistic path for recycling in the markets where it's sold. As of January 2025, that's still the standard. It doesn't matter whether it's a Lithonia fixture or a generic import. The claim has to survive scrutiny.

I also have mixed feelings about brand loyalty in general. On one hand, a known brand makes my audit trail easier. On the other, no brand should be purchased blindly. The customer who reads the spec, asks about the driver, and checks the mounting pattern is the customer who doesn't call me six months later with a failure report.
What I Actually Believe
Here's my position, and I'm not going to soften it: The most expensive lighting fixture is the one that has to be shipped back. It's not just the product cost. It's the engineering time, the electrical labor, the drywall repair, the schedule delay, and the call you have to make to your client. Education before the purchase is the cheapest insurance you'll ever buy.
So if you're specifying a project and the only number you're comparing is price per watt, you're missing the variables that create real cost. Ask for the photometry. Verify the mounting pattern. Check the color temperature in the actual space. Confirm the driver works with your control system. And if you're not sure, ask someone to walk through the spec with you. Trust me on this one—I review these things for a living.
An informed customer is the reason I can sign off on a submittal without crossing my fingers. That's not a soft goal. That's how we avoid the $22,000 call.
