  • Compatibility with controls: If the facility uses a dimming system (0-10V, DALI), does the cheap fixture actually play nice with it? Or does it flicker? That's another hidden cost.
  • Color consistency: Are you mixing a budget line next to a premium line in the same ceiling? The color shift can be jarring. That's an aesthetic cost, but a cost nonetheless.

I get why people go with the cheapest option—budgets are real. I've been there. But the hidden costs add up.

What I Look For Now (Circa 2025)

So what did I shift to? I look at the spec sheet, not the price tag. Specifically:

  • Driver quality: Is it a known brand (e.g., Philips, Osram, Mean Well) or a generic? A cheap driver is the number one failure point.
  • Lumen maintenance (L70, L90): At what hour does the light output drop to 70%? A cheap fixture might hit that at 30,000 hours. A better one at 50,000+.
  • Warranty terms: I now read the fine print. Does the warranty cover labor to replace a failed unit? Probably not. But the process for getting a replacement is part of the cost.
  • Compatibility: I check the manufacturer's compatibility matrix for the specific sensor or dimmer used on the project, not just the general 'works with 0-10V' statement.
  • Parts availability: Can I order a replacement driver for this model in 5 years? Or will it be obsolete? This is harder to predict, but a brand with a wide ecosystem (like Lithonia) is more likely to stock parts than a one-off budget brand.

I'd rather pay $80 for a fixture that lasts 10 years without a problem than $50 for one that might need a service call in year 3.

To be fair, even the expensive fixtures can fail. No manufacturer is perfect. But the probability is lower, and the support is usually better.
