Why Is My Emergency Brake Light Flashing? A Lithonia Lighting Installer’s Guide to Not Wasting a Weekend

You're on site, the installation's done, you flip the switch—and the red test button light on that Lithonia emergency light is flashing.

Not steady. Flashing. Like a slow, annoying blink.

If you're anything like me, your first instinct is to blame the fixture. Maybe a bad battery. Maybe a loose wire. And honestly, sometimes that's exactly the case. But I've got a graveyard of stories (and chargebacks) that say the real answer is rarely that neat.

Let me walk you through the three most common reasons I've seen for a flashing emergency light no matter if it's a Lithonia, a competitor, or a no-name clone. By the end, you'll know which scenario you're in, and what to do about it without burning a whole afternoon (and budget) chasing ghosts.

Scenario A: The Battery Is Dead or Dying

This is the most common cause. And the most annoying, because you literally just unpacked the fixture.

A flashing light on an emergency battery backup unit (BBU) is typically a self-diagnostic signal. The solid red light usually means 'charging OK,' but a flashing red light often means the internal battery has failed, is undercharged, or has reached end-of-life.

When this happened to me:

In 2023, I installed 40 Lithonia WF6 fixtures with emergency backups in a retail strip mall. The spec sheet said 'sealed lead-acid, 90-minute runtime.' We tested each one before drop-off. You know what happened? Six units had that damn flashing light right out of the box. Not because we broke anything—I checked. The fix:

A flashing light can also indicate a hardware fault in the emergency driver, not the battery. This usually happens when:

  • The AC input is reversed. Some emergency units are polarity-sensitive on the line/neutral feed. If you accidentally swapped them, the charging circuit might not work correctly, and the diagnostic light will flash a fault code.
  • The switched hot is connected to the emergency hot, not the normal hot. This is the most common mistake I see in commercial retrofits. The emergency backup needs to be on a constant (unswitched) hot line so it charges 24/7. If you've got it on a switch leg, the battery only charges when the switch is on. A flashing light might not mean a fault at all. Some Lithonia emergency LED drivers have a specific battery discharge/test mode that uses a flashing pattern to indicate the unit is in test mode (simulating power loss). This is normal, but it's easy to mistake for a failure if you don't know the exact test procedure for that specific model.

When does this happen?

  • When you press the test button for less than 5 seconds (intended or not), some units start a 30-second autonomy test, during which the light flashes.
